Miriam's Gift

Miriam's Gift is a special fund at Saint James to raise money for art supplies for the children on the Navajo reservation. It is named in memory of Michael and Kristen Smith's baby girl, Miriam Alice, who was born before she could survive outside her mother's womb.

Why art supplies?

Members of Saint James, including Michael and Kristen, have been going on mission trips to the Navajo every summer since 2004. They have had many memorable and meaningful experiences, but one experience stands out.

Last summer, our team went to Shiprock, New Mexico, on the Navajo reservation. At the end of one day's Vacation Bible School, Kristen was helping a little girl who was trying to find a coloring page she'd painted. When it seemed clear the picture was lost, Kristen offered her a page to color at home. She replied, "I don't have crayons in my house."

Children go without food and many other things from luxuries to necessities, but not having crayons is a shattering thought. Giving art supplies to the children on the reservation feeds their spirits and is a way to reclaim lost childhood.
