Attitude Check

Many times I have heard the first of the #Beatitudes interpreted purely in terms of #humility and I have interpreted it that way myself. In the lead up to the series I am preaching I spent some more time with this phrase:

Blessed are the spiritually poor—the kingdom of heaven is theirs.

This translation comes from The Voice, a more recent translation. And I wondered if this first Beatitude was purely about humility, why did Jesus not use the word "humble?" Then the text could have simply read, "Blessed are the humble..." Jesus did not use that word. Having spent time two weeks back brushing up on my "humility" for a sermon focused there, I am convinced there might be another kind of nuance to this first beatitude.
