Inherit the Earth?

"Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth." (Matthew 5:5) What was Jesus thinking when he said this? The #meek rarely get a break, let alone inherit anything, and Jesus says they will inherit the earth. Is he for real? The easiest way to explain this away is point to this as only about the "afterlife." However, Jesus was not nearly as interested in the afterlife as he was in this life.
